Dorothy Szczygiel, 86, of East Chicago, Indiana passed away October 24, 2019 with her loving family by her side. She was born December 18, 1932 to Mustafa and Emeline (Habib) Shabaz In East Chicago. She leaves to cherish her memories her children, Amena Gum, Phillip (Juanita) Gum, Marlena (Raymond) Arnold and Robert (Nancy Slivka ) Gum; step-daughter, Denise (Larry) Furman; grandchildren, Tyler Arnold, Desiray Arnold, Katelyn (Anthony) Sanchez, Brandon Gum, Justin Gum, Jimmel Gum, Jr., Benjamin Gum, Melissa (Brad) Huffman, Brennan Gum, Philip (Nicole) Topor, Becky Furman, Sarah Sajn, Jessica (Nathan) Melaro; many nieces nephews and great-grandchildren; brother, Edward Shabaz; and sister, Minnie Yoldash. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mustafa and Emeline Shabaz; husband, Benjamin Szczygiel; son, Jimmel Gum; and brother, Mitchell Shabaz. Dorothy worked for General American in her early years. She also worked for the City of East Chicago for many years. She was a graduate of Washington High School, class of 1951. Dorothy will be deeply missed by her loving family and dear friends.
