Carol W. Vermillion June 15, 1939 – October 27, 2019 Carol Kay (nee Weingarten) Vermillion (aka Carol K., Carol Kathryn, Carol W. Vermillion) transitioned with support of her faith, her family, and her friends on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at AngelsGrace Hospice. She was 80 years old. She is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob”, daughter Colette of Waukesha, son Neal (Kerrie Shannon), and granddaughter Claire of Frankfurt, Germany. Born in La Crosse, WI, Carol’s hometown, a small Western Wisconsin village of West Salem, left an indelible imprint. Her education K-12 was in the West Salem Public Schools. Her strength in leadership began to take from here—Band, FHA (State officer), yearbook editor, Badger State Girls, Salutatorian. She graduated in 1957 from West Salem High School and in 1961 from Wisconsin State College, La Crosse. She took great pride in her teaching, and her talent was clear. She taught Grade 3 at Lincoln School in Port Washington 1961-1963. Then she enrolled at UW-Madison where she was awarded a Master’s Degree in 1964. It was there that her experience supervising student teachers found root, and she continued that work with great skill all her professional life. Summers 1965-1968 she supervised/directed student teachers at UW-Eau Claire’s campus school. Carol was a child-centered professional, a consummate teacher, and a mentor to educators. From 1964-1971 she taught multi-age, nongraded primary at Good Hope School, Glendale. It was a forward-looking and successful program. Later she became ‘resource teacher’ in the same school. And in this period she was active in local and state education associations including serving as state chair of WEA’s Curriculum and Instruction Committee which developed and hosted conference and seminars at 8 sites around the state. In 1971 she married Bob at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in West Salem, Wisconsin. They were a team! They were devoted partners, family-centered, and tireless advocates for their children. They spoke 30-40 times to inservice groups in education and nursing and advocacy organizations about their experiences seeking appropriate programming and services for their daughter. As her children were becoming more independent, Carol supervised student teachers for Cardinal Stritch College and conducted their seminar on campus. She continued other part-time work at Cardinal Stritch from 1976 to 1985. She taught “Teaching Through Learning Channels” and “Teacher Effectiveness and Classroom Handling” by Performance Learning Systems. She taught Elementary School Curriculum in 1976 at Stritch. When she returned to full-time work at Lannon School in the Hamilton-Sus School District from 1986 to 2000, her leadership and mentoring roles continued. Carol was a supremely accomplished and skilled homemaker and devoted to her family. She was a leader and friend, a mother, wife, a sister, an aunt, and a grandmother. She will be missed. Carol is also survived by her brother Tom (Sally) Weingarten, Stevens Point, and nieces Gretchen (Jesse) Koch, Greenville, WI; Rebecca (Chris) Taylor, Silver Spring, MD; Laura (Wes) Ferguson, Austin Texas; Debbie (Willie) Martin Lynn, Elkhorn, WI; and Dawn (Mike) McBride, Lake Geneva, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents Marie (Cavadini) [2002] and Herbert [1961] Weingarten and her sister Mary Jo Weingarten [2000], and sister-in-law Dorothy Martin [2018]. Visitation will be held from 3 PM until 6 PM on Friday, November 1, 2019 at St. Catherine’s of Alexandria Catholic Church, W359 N8512 Brown St, Oconomowoc, WI. A second visitation will be held from 9 AM until 9:45 AM on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 AM. Memorials are listed below and are appreciated.
