He served in the 699th Quartermaster Repair and Maintenance Co. as a clothing textile tailor and repairman. While serving in the military, he was stationed Germany and in France. After his tour of duty overseas was complete, he returned to his hometown, of Metropolis, and attended West KY College and studied tailoring. After graduating, he opened his own tailoring business in downtown Metropolis. He married his wife Mary Dabbs and she worked in the shop with him, and they started their family. When the opportunity came to work at the EEI Plant, he closed his business and he worked there until his retirement. He received his calling into the ministry, and pastored St Paul AME Church in Metropolis, Bethel AME Church in Brookport, Baber Chapel in Carrier Mills, Bethel Harrisburg, Ward Chapel Cairo, St Paul Mounds, as well as in churches in Golconda and Mermet Illinois. He loved being a church pastor, helping new and young members find their purpose in the church and developing their relationship with Jesus Christ. He loved fellowshipping with different denominations of churches, attending homecomings, witnessing and leading people to the Lord, and would pray for any and everyone. He loved music. He loved performing weddings for couples in his family home foyer. In his young adult days Bobbie had many adventures. He enjoyed whittling, hunting and fishing with his Dad, Edward Sr. and his brother, Edward Jr. He also enjoyed the freedom, and adventure of riding his INDIAN motorcycle with his motorcycle buddies, and taking solo road trips. It was on one particular motorcycle spill that he was aided by a man named Otis Skaggs, who after many times of tenaciously witnessing to, before and after this specific incident, he eventually led Bobbie to accept the Lord Jesus Christ, as his personal Savior. He later became the Pastor of his, and Bobbie’s home church. He enjoyed sitting and drinking coffee around his kitchen table and joking with family and friends. When he was up able to tend to his own yard, he enjoyed riding his lawn mower, and he would reluctantly tend to Mary’s flowers. He enjoyed going on car rides and eating lunch in the park with his wife. Bobbie was also a frequent Diner Club Member of McDonald’s and Hardees, where he drank numerous cups of coffee and cultivated new and old friendships, and catching up the latest news in Metropolis, and talking about the Lord. Bobbie was a dedicated father and family man. He loved being a father. He was the type of Dad, that was jokingly known as the kind “who would come to their rescue, in a canoe in the midst of a rain storm.” He loved taking them on camping trips, fishing, car rides, out to eat, shopping, and amusement parks. Bobbie Crossland was also a lover of dogs. He rescued many a family pets from the pound and gave them fur-ever homes with his family. He loved tinkering with his cars, recruiting his wife and daughters in his all hands on deck when it came to repairing and maintaining them.
