William J. “Mooch” Michelli, 88, of Tiffin, passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at St. Francis Home. He was born on April 20, 1931, in New Philadelphia, Ohio, to William P. and Helen (Martovich) Michelli. On June 21, 1952, he married Helen Steinmetz. Survivors include his wife, Helen Michelli of Tiffin; daughters, Karen (Ronald) Boner of Tiffin, Linda (Steve) Sauer of Carroll and Janet (Ron) Griffen of Pataskala; sister, Irene Cantwell of Garden Grove, CA; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Frank Michelli. Mooch graduated in 1949 from New Philadelphia High School, attended Heidelberg College, playing football for three years until he served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Africa, from 1952 to 1956. After returning from the Air Force, he graduated from Heidelberg in 1957 and then went on to Bowling Green State University earning his Master’s Degree. Mooch taught at West Junior High School for over forty years, taught night school at Tiffin University and coached football at West, Tiffin Columbian High School and at Heidelberg College. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, American Legion Post 169, AmVets Post 48, Tiffin Eagles 402 and Tiffin Elks 94, where he was the past Exalted Ruler. Mooch enjoyed teaching hunter safety classes for years, oil and water painting and going to Casinos. His Funeral Mass will be at 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the United Veterans Council.
