Virginia’s Obituary On Friday, August 16, 2019, Virginia Lee Christensen, loving wife, and mother of five children passed away at the age of 74. Virginia was born on September 15, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois to Fred and Mildred (Soukup) Gertmann. She received her education degree from Northern Illinois University in 1965, and her master’s in 1970. On December 21, 1968, she married Ronald James Christensen. They raised two sons, Keith and Carl, and three daughters, Kathy, Karen, and Kim. Virginia had a passion for gardening. Her yard was a showstopper and she volunteered extensively for the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. She worked hard to become a Master Gardener and used her own funds to fill and maintain the planters and flower beds at the Symmes library for many years. Education was another of her passions. She knew that she wanted to become a teacher when she graduated from 8th grade and pursued her goal with a laser focus; joining the Future Teacher’s Association, obtaining scholarships and graduating at the top of her class. She attended one of the top elementary education schools in the nation and graduated with honors. The years she spent as a full-time teacher and then a substitute teacher were very important to her and her experience in educating young minds benefited her children as a stay at home mom as well. Virginia loved animals of all kinds. She provided a veritable menagerie of animals for her children including multiple dogs, cats, birds, fish, rabbits and guinea pigs. She would have had a llama too if it wasn’t for those darn homeowner’s association rules forbidding farm animals. She was known for her indomitable spirit, fierce intelligence, and caregiving nature. Virginia was preceded in death by her father, Fred, and her mother, Mildred. She is survived by her husband Ron, her five children, Keith, Kathy, Karen, Carl, and Kim, her sister Dorothy, and several grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and a nephew.
