August 14 2019
“And for this child I prayed:” Paul Steven Mullins, age 36, of Bluefield, WV, passed away peacefully in the safety and comfort of his home on Wednesday, August 14, 2019. Paul was born November 6, 1982, into the NICU of Roanoke Memorial Hospital and began the first of several “fights for his life”. Paul came home to Glen Lyn, Virginia, on January 13, 1983, where he was loved and spoiled by his extended family of the Glen Lyn Church of Christ. He and his parents moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1987 where he was again loved by his extended family of the Westview Christian Church. Paul started school at Calvary Christian School in Charlotte where he excelled academically especially in math. Paul was always “busy” – playing soccer and basketball, for which he had a natural talent. Paul made lifelong friends while in Charlotte and was able to visit with them just recently. He also developed a love for the Charlotte Hornets basketball team and later the Carolina Panthers football team, and was an avid fan of both teams. Paul moved with his family, which now included a younger sister and brother, to Bluefield in 1995 where he became a member of the Maple View Church of Christ. In recent years he has attended the Goodwin’s Chapel Church of Christ where his father ministers. Paul attended Mercer Christian Academy where he also made lifelong friends and continued his love of sports. Paul transferred to Pikeview High School in the 9th grade. While a student there, Paul was seriously injured in a car accident caused by a drunk driver and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and began another “fight for his life”. After months in the hospital and rehab, Paul came home and true to his will to survive, he fought on and was able to finish high school and attend the Valley College of Technology. Paul lived with the residual effects of the brain injury and later developed several serious illnesses and had multiple surgeries but kept on “fighting” until he gave up his fight and made his final journey on this earth to his eternal home where he is now being loved eternally and unconditionally. Those left to cherish Paul’s memory include his parents, Jim and Patty Mullins, with whom he lived his entire life, his sister KeriBeth (Luke) Schrage of Bluefield, his brother Philip (Julie) Mullins of Scott Depot, his special “neicey” Ariella Schrage whom he loved so much, his grandmother Carol Mullins of Richlands, and his four-legged companion Panda. Paul also was especially close to his cousins, Matt Cox, Jennifer Reid, Grant Blackburn, Steven Cox and Mike Cox. Paul also leaves behind several aunts and uncles to whom he was close including Susan Cox, Barbara (Pete) Rider, Doris Robinette, Joe Mullins, Jeff (Jackie) Mullins, Patrick (Lorraine) Mullins, and great-uncle Slick (Bonnie) Cook. Paul also leaves behind many family members in Maryland and Ohio whom he loved to visit as a child. Paul also had a very large extended family which always held a special place in his heart. Some of these include Jimmy and Patty Meadows, Sarah Meadows-Spencer (his “big sister”), Grayson and Bertha Pettrey, Gene and Shirley Hazelwood, Mike and Jodi Deal, Terry and Pam Grammer, and many, many others. Paul also leaves behind his lifelong friends Tim Toler, Jon Worley, Richard Witherspoon, Kevin Taylor, Brian Taylor, Kevin Deal and Chip Deal. Paul is preceded in death by his grandparents Homer and ‘MaMaw’ Hazel Mullins, grandfather Percy James Mullins, and great-grandparents Paul Cook, Clyde and Dorothy (‘Granny Grunt’) Cook, great-grandparents Ernest and Nancy Mullins, and his uncles Ray Cox and Ronnie Mullins.
