Lowell L. Smith, 87, of Carmi, passed away Monday, September 9, 2019 at 9:10 a.m. at Wabash Christian Village in Carmi. He was born on October 23, 1931 in Hamilton County, IL, the son of Ralph David and Rosa Vianna (Cotter) Smith. Lowell married Mary Louise Shields in November 1956 and she preceded him in death in March 1971. He then married Mary Imogene Cozart on August 10, 1972 and she preceded him in death on August 26, 2015. He retired as the Principal of Big Prairie School. He also served as the Principal at Brownsville School where he also taught 7th grade Social Studies and coached basketball. Lowell was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Lowell loved hunting, fishing, gardening and farming. He especially enjoyed telling stories and jokes. Lowell is survived by a son, Steven Smith of Carmi; two daughters, Cindy (Gary) Harris of Bone Gap and Cathy Smith of Chicago; five brothers, Harold Smith, of Woodbridge, VA, Buell Bernard “B” Smith, of Huntsville, AL, Adrian Smith, of Newburgh, IN, Phillip Smith, of San Antonio, TX and Michael Smith, of Bloomington, IL; two sisters, Vivian Tucker, of Roanoke, VA and Jean Stricklin, of Lansing, IL; five grandchildren, Patrick (Kristen) Harris of Albion, Craig (Shelby) Harris of Effingham, Caitlinn (Jacob) Speir, of Grayville, Brandon Harris, of Charleston and Ryan Harris, of Bone Gap; five great-grandchildren, Levi and Holland Harris, Hadley and Hayden Harris and Weston Speir; numerous nieces and nephews including a special niece and nephew, Jeff Gowdy and Jenny (Jeff) Bolin who he helped raise and their families, Hannah, Samantha, Maegan, Whitney, Kash and Azlynne. He was preceded in death by a brother, Cameron Smith and a sister, Venita Stewart. Funeral services for Lowell L. Smith, 87, will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, September 13, 2019 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial will be in White County Memorial Garden with Military Rites by the Carmi VFW and American Legion. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Campbell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Lowell’s memory to the Michael J.
