There will be no formal visitation, but friends who wish to sign the guestbook may do so on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Ricks-Bowers Funeral Home in Jewett. Lorene Carrington Clute passed away surrounded by family on September 15, 2019, at the youthful age of 101 years and 10 months in Sugar Land, Texas. Lorene was born on November 7, 1917, in Vivian, Louisiana. She was the third child of five born to Sam and Maggie Tull Carrington. Around 1928, the family moved to Marquez, Texas. The world changed a great deal in her 101+ years – eighteen presidents, electricity in homes, indoor plumbing, Charles Lindbergh’s solo flight, telephones in homes to cellphones, TVs, Hawaii and Alaska became states, first man landed on the moon, computers, the internet, Elvis, and Dallas (she loved JR!) Lorene graduated from Marquez High School in 1935 where she enjoyed playing softball. She frequently told of the delicious chicken fried steaks she would get every time she hit a homerun. Lorene married the love of her life, Jay Clute, in May 1938. They moved to Houston where they raised their two daughters, Kay and Beth. Lorene worked for Texas Instruments. She delighted in cooking for her family. Her kitchen often would be filled with the delicious aromas of everyone’s favorite pie or dessert. When Lorene wasn’t cooking, she adored spoiling her grandchildren. Lorene and Jay “retired” in the early 1990s and moved back home to Leon County. Lorene loved to volunteer in the community. She often could be found volunteering at the Lord’s Pantry, Jewett Spring Fling, Jewett Fall Frolic, Marquez Church of Christ, Jewett Area Chamber of Commerce (JACC), and at the elections. Lorene received many awards throughout her long life. She received JACC’s Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award in 2005. In 2007, Lorene was awarded the JACC’s Citizen of the Year. She was the 27th Annual Fall Frolic Parade Grand Marshall in 2009. In 2010, Lorene was thrilled to be recognized by JACC with an award named in her honor, the Lorene Clute Volunteer of the Year. Recipients of the award radiate Lorene’s very giving nature and volunteer spirit. Don’t forget the Lorene Clute Sweet Shop at the Annual Jewett Fall Frolic! At the young age of 97, Lorene was crowned prom queen at the Fort Bend Seniors’ Senior Prom. Throughout her life, Lorene had a passion for quilting. She lovingly handstitched quilts for her two daughters, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and countless friends. Her award-winning quilts were cherished and admired by all. Into her later years, Lorene found a new enjoyment in coloring. She would spend hours surrounded by her colored pencils and markers filling pages with the colors she treasured. Her most favorite time of the year was Christmas. Lorene’s home would be filled with Christmas inside and out. She covered her home with as many Christmas lights as she could. Inside would be bursting with the holiday spirit and every dancing Santa, Christmas tree, and holiday character made. She is survived by her two daughters – Kay Hand and Beth Ludeke; three grandchildren – Michelle Florence, Daryl Renfrow, and Cari Beth Cephus; and three great-grandchildren – Scott Florence, Alex Renfrow, and Cayla Cephus. Lorene was preceded in death by her father, Sam, and her mother, Maggie; her husband, Jay, of 57 years; brothers, Raymond “Bunch” Carrington, Jack Carrington, Paul Carrington; and sister, Mary Carrington Yarbrough Curtis. Lorene’s last wish is that you keep Texas Red and vote for Trump in 2020.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Lorene Clute November 7 1917 September 15 2019.
