Mr. Jack Wilkes Carter, 81, of Adel passed away Thursday, September 5, 2019 at Berrien Nursing Center. Mr. Carter was born January 18, 1938 and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Adel. Survivors include his wife, June R. Carter of Adel; five children, Frank H. Carter (Rhonda) of Adel, Georgia, Anna-Marie’ Carter of Sparks, Georgia, Johnny Stubbs (Robin) of Cordele, Georgia, Sandy Murphy of Lake Park, Georgia, Blake Stubbs (Kimberly) of Ray City, Georgia, eleven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren; his brother, George L. Carter of Pelham, Alabama, and sisters, Mildred Green of Cummings, Georgia, and Christine Habshey of Atlanta, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews in which he loved making them laugh, and being entertained by their great talents. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Wilkes Carter and Frank Carter, sisters, Mary Jemima Clark, Martha Carter Schow, Nannette Elrod, and a brother, Roy Del Carter. As a child, his father passed when he was 9 years old, and he went to work with “Big Ralph” Hill as a delivery boy on the milk truck. He worked from the 4th grade to 12th grade with Mr. Hill. Jack W. Carter was a Private in the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky in 1957. He then attended Woodrow Wilson School of Law and was sworn in as an attorney in 1962. He practiced many years at his law office in Adel. In 1972, he initiated and formed the Cook County Midget Football League and was elected the President of the League. He coached the Blackhawk teams for many years, and is known to a countless number of youngsters and adults as “Coach Jack.” In 1975 he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives and was honored served his constituents. He was a member of the Judiciary, Industry and Insurance Committees. Jack W. Carter joined the Grand Lodge of Georgia in 1967, and on January 11, 2019 he was presented with the Masonic 50 year apron. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the First Baptist Church in Adel at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Bill Marlette and Rev. A. J. Hall officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn City Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Purvis Funeral Home.
