Ethel’s Obituary Ethel Mary (Hopek) Tomashefsky, 85, of Quakertown passed away on Monday, September 23, 2019. She was the loving wife of the late Victor “Tom” Tomashefsky for 51 years. Ethel was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 12, 1934 (even though her birth certificate erroneously lists her birthday as February 11) to the late Benjamin Martin Hopek and the late Mary (Ambel) Hopek. As a young woman in the 1950s, Ethel worked as a waitress for Horn & Hardart Automat in Rockefeller Center, New York. Later, she became a key punch operator for Chase Manhattan Bank. Ethel and Tom bought their first home in Jamaica, Queens in the early 1960s. They relocated several times during their marriage, owning homes in Lynbrook, New York; New Britain, Pa.; Bedminster, Pa. and Quakertown, Pa. While raising her family, Ethel worked a variety of part-time jobs. In 1978 — with the encouragement of her husband – she purchased a pizza shop in Dublin, Pa. She managed the shop single-handedly for several years and eventually was joined by Tom. The house specialty of Tom’s Place was a kielbasa pizza – a tribute to their mutual Polish heritage. Ethel cared for her parents until they passed in the 1980s. After retiring from the pizza shop, she happily provided childcare for her two youngest grandchildren. Ethel loved to cook – her meatballs, cornbread stuffing, cheesy soup and homemade apple pies will be sorely missed. She also was an avid reader, until her vision failed. During her life, Ethel enjoyed traveling and had several memorable family trips to Disney World, San Francisco, New Orleans and Italy. She liked to surround herself with photos and her cheerful collection of Santa Claus figurines. Ethel had a sharp sense of humor, generous spirit and was never afraid to stand up for others and herself. She loved sharing zany stories from her exciting and sometimes unbelievable life, from facing down the mafia, brushes with celebrities, creating legendary practical jokes and surviving a factory fire, explosion and earthquake. Ethel is survived by her daughter, Camille (and George) of Quakertown, Pa.; her four grandchildren – Meghan (and Brian) Candelario of Martinez, Calif.; Jared (and Toni) Dager of Los Angeles, Calif.; Victoria Dager of Los Angeles, Calif., and Jesse Dager of Quakertown, Pa. She has two great-grandchildren, Dane and Chase Carpenter, by granddaughter Meghan. In addition to her parents and husband, Ethel was preceded in death by her grandson, Stanley Robinson Dager. Ethel was a long-term member of Deep Run Mennonite Church West in Perkasie, Pa., where she participated in the women’s Bible study. A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Deep Run Mennonite Church West, 1001 Deep Run Road, Perkasie, PA 18944. Visitation with the family will be from 1:30 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Inurnment will take place at the adjacent Deep Run West Mennonite Cemetery immediately following the service.
