Alice A. Hoekstra, age 97, of Sibley, Iowa, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019 at the Country View Manor in Sibley. Memorial Services will be Friday, September 6, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church in Sibley. Rev. Tom Voigt officiating. Private Family Graveside Services will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Worthington, Minnesota. Visitation will be Thursday, September 5, from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home in Sibley. Alice Augusta Brouwer was born on August 17, 1922 near Crookston, Minnesota. In the fall of 1926 her family left that area and moved to Platte, South Dakota where she attended school through the 7th grade. They moved to Osceola County, Iowa and Alice finished her grade school education at Horton Township. She went to high school in Bigelow, Minnesota for two years and finished high school in Sibley, Iowa, graduating in 1940. She was united in marriage to Sidney E. Hoekstra on April 2, 1942 at Camp Callan, San Diego, California. They lived in California and Nevada until Sidney went overseas with the Signal Corp, attached to the 5th Air Force. Alice returned to Sibley and worked in a grocery store until Sidney returned from overseas duty in November of 1945. They lived in Sibley until the spring of 1947 when they moved to a farm 3 miles north of Bigelow, Minnesota. Alice was a busy farm wife. She raised a big garden, canned fruits, vegetables and meat. She mowed the lawn, milked cows, fed hogs and drove tractor when and where needed. They raised 3 sons and enjoyed helping them at home and school. In November of 1980 they moved back to Sibley. Sidney passed away on September 19, 2003. Alice was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sibley since 1949. She taught Sunday School, helped with Bible School, sang in the choir, and was a member of the Esther Circle for many years. Alice volunteered at Senior Citizens, Country View Manor, the Passion Play, Relay for Life, Meals on Wheels and Bloodmobile, donating almost 7 gallons of blood. She was awarded the State of Iowa Volunteer Of The Year, in 1992. She passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019 at the Country View Manor in Sibley. Those left to cherish her memories are her 2 sons, Bradley and Sheryl Hoekstra of Worthington, MN, and their 2 children, Virginia and Aaron Wold and their daughter, Evelyn, Joel and Alisha Hoekstra and their children, Lucas, Ian and Ezra; Jay and Deb Hoekstra of Apple Valley, MN and their son, Mark and Nina Hoekstra; daughter-in-law, Marian Hoekstra of Grand Forks, ND. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Hoekstra; one son, Royce Hoekstra; her parents; 2 brothers, Alfred and Jeanette Brouwer, John Brouwer; 2 sisters, Tillie and Martin Iedema, Nellie and Francis (Shorty) Ketel.
