Ron’s Obituary Ron Bogus, 84, passed away Friday, August 9, 2019 at his home in Columbus. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at St. Isidore Catholic Church. Visitation is 4:00-7:00 p.m. Monday with a 7:00 Vigil Service at St Isidore Catholic Church. Visitation will continue Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. also at the church. Interment is in the St. Patrick/Joseph Cemetery in Platte Center. Ronald Charles Bogus was born July 18, 1935, in Platte Center to Joseph and Anna (Staph) Bogus. He received his elementary education at St. Joseph’s school and was a l953 graduate of Platte Center High School. He attended Norfolk Junior College (Northeast Community College) and is a member of that school’s Hall of Success. On September 14, 1955 he married his high school sweetheart Bonnie Foltz at St. Joseph’s church in Platte Center. The union resulted in four children—sons Randy and Rick and daughters Deb and Tami. The young couple moved to Columbus where Ron accepted a position with the Columbus Telegram. He was a reporter and photographer until 1965 when he accepted the position of news director for Columbus’ first commercial radio station KTTT. While in the news business, Ron was privileged to be able to interview John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy upon their campaign visits to Columbus. In 1968 he was awarded by the Associated Press as Nebraska’s top print and broadcast news contributor. In 1970 he accepted a position with Nebraska Public Power District and retired in 1996 after 26 years with NPPD as Manager of Public Affairs. Bogus was always active in the community. He was a longtime secretary/treasurer of the Columbus Little League Baseball Association.. As an active member of the Scotus Shamrock Club he was Master of Ceremonies at several athletic banquets and was honored to introduce many sports celebrities. During his working years, Bogus was a member of the Nebraska Press Association, the Nebraska Broadcasters Association and the Omaha Press Club. He was a nationally recognized accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). After retiring from NPPD Bogus held positions with Leslie Associates, an Omaha public relations firm, and the Midlands Business Journal. He was a founding member of St. Isidore’s Catholic Church. Before the church was built, he was a server at daily and weekend mass. He later served on the parish council, was a lector, an usher and a money counter. He was appointed to the city’s first Golf Advisory Board when the VanBerg Family donated the former Elks Country Club golf course and property to the city. He later served 16 years on the Columbus Board of Parks and Recreational Commission. He was elected to the first of his three 4-year terms on the Columbus City Council in 2002. He decided not to seek a fourth term in 2014 due to health issues. While on the council he served on the Board of the Northeast Nebraska Area Agency on Aging and on the Northeast Nebraska Solid Waste Coalition. He served several years as chairman of that Coalition. He was a member of the Elks, Sons of the American Legion (SAL) and an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing cards, Nebraska football, where he was a long time season ticket holder, and local high school sports. He frequently watched his children and grandchildren in there various activities. Bogus is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bonnie; son Randy of Omaha; daughter Deb (Paul) Schlickbernd of West Point; daughter Tami (Larry) Buntgen of Eden Prairie, MN.; son Rick (Dawn) Bogus of Columbus; grandchildren Jeff (Joyce) Schlilckbernd of Bennington; Stacey (Matt) Mostek of Kearney; Amy Dinslage (fiancé Zach) of Kearney; Bryce (Katie) Schlickbernd of Beemer; Rachyl (Peter) Kafonek of Fremont; Cody Schlickbernd of West Point; Kristyn (Tyler) Drey of Fremont; Chelsea (Seth) Wigle of Jefferson City, MO.; Chase Buntgen of Chanhassen, MN.; Luke Bogus, of Columbus; and step grandchildren Blaney and Jac Dreifurst of Columbus and Karli Frenzen of Lincoln and 15 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Carroll (Betty) and Kenneth (Dolores); and sister Marilyn (John) Schuckman. Read More
