Peter Haldor Sneve, 91, died August 1, 2019 in the Memory Care Unit of Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center, Duluth, MN. Peter was born in Duluth on June 19, 1928 to Jack and Willimina Sneve and was a lifelong resident of Duluth. He attended Congdon Park, East Junior High School, Central, Taft School in Watertown, CT, and the University of Minnesota (Chi Psi). Peter was a stockbroker with PaineWebber Jackson and Curtis in Duluth for 39 years, 20 years as its Branch Manager. He was very active in the Duluth community, serving on many Boards, Commissions, and Foundations, including: Duluth Planning Commission, Ducks Unlimited, Arrowhead Chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Depot Foundation, the Kitchi Gammi Club, the DECC, Duluth Congregational Church, Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce, Duluth Art Institute, Duluth Community Action Program, West Duluth Businessman’s Club, and Duluth Rotary Club #25. Peter was politically active in the community. He was elected to and served on the Duluth City Council and earlier on the Duluth School Board, where he served as the Treasurer of the Board. He also served as the Treasurer of Duluth Teachers’ Retirement Fund Assn. Peter had many interests. His autumns were filled with hunting trips to Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Montana and northern Minnesota to hunt waterfowl and upland game, a tradition handed down from his father. He also loved downhill skiing, frequenting Mont du Lac, Lutsen, and later Spirit Mountain, and Vail Resort in Colorado on big men’s trips. He played a lot of tennis with a men’s group and with the family. Peter was an avid bird watcher; even roadside ditches were not safe from his eagle eyes as he spied for birds of any kind. Peter was also a great UMD hockey fan – both men’s and women’s teams. Two places close to Peter’s heart were Sunshine Lake and Sanibel Island. Sunshine Lake was part of Peter’s life since he was a child at his parents’ place, later he and Sally built their own home next door. He created Currier & Ives Christmases for his kids and grandkids, snow blowing huge ice rinks on the lake for our skating pleasure. He loved to sail his Sunfish and had fun with the family on his pontoon boat. Visiting Sanibel every spring brought relief from Duluth winters, and a chance to watch a whole different kind of birds. Peter’s favorite place, however, was Duluth, Minnesota. When anyone visited from out of town, or he was recruiting a new employee at PaineWebber, he drove them to all of h favorite spots and overlooks. He was definitely Duluth’s #1 booster! He also wrote a newsletter for his friends who were snowbirds, or had moved away, to keep them apprised of events and seasonal happenings in Duluth. Peter always had a smile for everyone and a twinkle in his eye, and always made a person feel welcome. Hand outstretched for a handshake, he would say, “Hi! I’m Pete Sneve!” Peter was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Willie, his brother Jack, and sisters Jean and Toodie. He is survived by his dear wife, Sally, to whom he had been happily married for 67 years, by his four children, Katherine Sneve of Maple Grove, Roger Sneve (Deborah) of Sioux Falls, Philip Sneve (Mary) of Duluth, and Sarah LeDoux (Dean) of Minneapolis. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, sister-and brother-in-law Lisa Hutchinson and Roger Hartley, and many nephews and nieces. Many thanks go to the blessed staff at Chris Jensen for their loving care during the past year. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at the Duluth Congregational Church, 3833 E. Superior Street, at 11:00 on Friday, September 6. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 5 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Dougherty Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials to the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island, FL or the Gnesen Volunteer Fire Department of rural Duluth. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, 218-727-3555. .

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Peter Haldor Sneve June 19 1928 August 1 2019 (age 91).
