Bennettsville Ms. Miriam Chavis Griggs passed away Friday, August 23, 2019 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter after an illness. She was 75 years old. Ms. Griggs was born on October 14, 1943 in Bennettsville, SC to the late Emerson Ford and Eva Mae Chavis. Mrs. Griggs obtained her BA in music from Pembroke State University. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in McColl, where she was the church pianist, soloist, minister of music for 21 years, and nursery worker. She also taught Kindergarten at Stevens Christian Academy. During her free time, she enjoyed reading, flowers, artwork, sewing, and taking rides in the country. Ms. Griggs leaves behind to cherish her loving memory; son, Rodney Griggs (Doris) of Morven, NC; daughter, Becky Griggs Leonard (Steven) of Morven, NC; sisters; Brenda Chavis Moody of Bennettsville, SC, Ruby Chavis Hatcher of Cheraw, SC, and Nina Chavis Leviner of Bennettsville, SC; grandchildren, Abigail, Michael, David, and Ethan Leonard; a special friend, Roland Stuckey. She was preceded in death by her parents listed above; brothers, Wayne Chavis, Jerry Chavis; niece, Amber Brooke Langley. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at Eastside Baptist Church in McColl, SC, with burial in Grant Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Rogers Williams. A visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Monday, August 26, 2019 at Burroughs Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Eastside Baptist Church, 201 N Church St, McColl, SC 29570.
