Mary Louise Rice, 89, of Bloomington passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at Garden Villa in Bloomington, Indiana. She was born on March 20, 1930 in Bloomington. The daughter of John Harris and Mary Ellen (Douglas) Pope, Mary attended Bloomington High School and worked for Kresges and then Kmart (Westside) in Bloomington for over 20 years. Mary was very proud to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Van Buren Township Fire Department from 1982 to 2018. She also served as Van Buren Township Precinct Committeeman and registered thousands of voters over the years door to door and at the Monroe County Fair. Mary married Paul Edward Rice on March 20, 1952 in Bloomington where they spent 55 happy years together. She enjoyed the outdoors, bird watching, camping, fishing, mushroom hunting, and gardening with her husband, as well as spending time with her family and friends. She is greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mary is survived by her son, Alan D. Rice of Bloomington, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and all eight brothers and sisters. A Celebration of Life open house will be held at the Van Buren Fire Department on Saturday, August 31, 2019 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Cremation Rites have been accorded.
