Mary was born March 12, 1927, in South Tunnel, Tenn., to John Trousdale Smallwood and Lovie Clay Taylor Smallwood. She was the youngest of four children and the last survivor of her beloved family. She grew up in East and South Nashville and graduated from Howard High School in 1945. She attended David Lipscomb College for several years. At Howard, she was a cheerleader and won the heart of her husband of 72 years, Raymond E. Proctor. Mary worked at Ingram Industries as a secretary and eventually found a place at Lipscomb where she served as executive secretary to the Dean of Men and Dean of Women. Many would say that she more or less ran the school for decades. She was a devoted fan of Lipscomb sports, as well as UT and Vandy and never missed a game, even if it was only on television. She and Raymond were members of Green Street Church of Christ for many years and eventually moved their membership closer to home to Joelton Church of Christ. Wherever she worshipped, Mary gave of her time endlessly as a teacher, counselor, cook, and friend. Her influence as a Sunday School teacher influenced countless young lives and she loved each and every student. Many have personal stories about her strong influence on their young lives. She loved her family and friends deeply and loyally and was always available to fill every need. Mary’s children, grandchildren, great-children, and great-great-grandchildren were a constant source of joy and she made their visits an event. She loved making greeting cards and until recently made and sent more than 200 cards every year. Mary’s first love was the church and she spent countless hours in prayer. She was quick with a laugh, prayer, and hug and was never the first to let go. Mary was preceded in death by her father, John Trousdale Smallwood, her mother, Lovie Clay Taylor Smallwood, sisters Naomi Smallwood Woodward, Margaret Smallwood Gardner, brother John T. (JT) Smallwood. She is survived by her devoted husband of almost 73 years, Raymond E.
