Torres was welcomed into the glory of Heaven by our Lord and Savior to live in eternal paradise. He was born on November 12, 1939 in Bryan, Texas to Fernando and Adela Montes Torres. As a child, growing up in Salado, Texas he was very curious about nature and his surroundings, always exploring the pastures and woods around his home. As a teen, he worked at the historic Stagecoach Inn in Salado. He spoke many times about exploring the cave near the hotel, and swimming in Salado Creek. Later, he heard the call to serve his country and enlisted in the Army. Just before departing, he met the absolute love of his life, Miss Elisa Saenz, in a restaurant in Copperas Cove, Texas and fell head over heels in love. A love that would last his entire life. They had a few dates before he had to leave for basic training in Colorado. While in the Army, he was deployed overseas and fought in the Vietnam War from 1965-1968, all the while writing love letters to his sweetheart. On, January 11, 1969 he and “Lis”, as he would so loving call her, were united in marriage by Justice of the Peace, and on June 11, 1969 they were once again married in the eyes of God and the holy Catholic Church. They went on to have two daughters, Veronica Ann and Carolyn Carrie. Growing up, his daughters enjoyed hearing the tales of his journey through life. One story that always sticks out in their minds is the time he saved a man’s life while driving home late one night after visiting family in Belton. On a lonely road he came across a car that had flipped over and was on fire. The driver’s long hair was pinned underneath the car and he was unable to escape the flames. Martin pulled out his knife, cut the man’s hair, and freed him from the wreckage. His only regret was that he never got the stranger’s name. Martin often thought of him and wondered if the stranger remembered him as well. Martin was a Master Electrician and owned Torres Electric, which is how everyone in Cuero and Victoria knew him. He passed on his talent and knowledge to his son-in-law, grandson Chris, and so many other electrician apprentices starting their own careers. He also worked many years as an electrician at Mount Vernon Mills before finally retiring. As were the highs and lows of raising a family, the highs were watching their daughters grow and start families of their own, but the low was losing his wife suddenly in 2008, in which he never fully recovered from his broken heart. Through the years he was the topic of many book reports, essays, and school projects highlighting his time in the war by nieces, nephews, and his grandchildren. More recently, he was happy spending time with his youngest daughter and grandsons in Cuero and taking several driving trips to Georgia to visit his oldest daughter, son in law, and grandchildren. You might have seen him at a local restaurant, wearing his Vietnam Veteran cap, having breakfast, lunch, or dinner, giving waitresses a hard time, or simply talking about his beloved “Lis”. On many occasions he would anonymously pay for another diner’s meal out of the generosity of his heart. Martin’s spirit will live on through his two loving daughters Ronii and Carrie, son in law Gonzalo and grandchildren Christopher Martin, Rocky Anthony, Xavier Anthony, Ariana Elisa, and Matthew James. His service to his country inspired his grandson Xavier to follow in his military footsteps and enlist in the US Army. His surviving sisters and brother are: Jesusa Morin, Josephine Ruiz, Julia Mares, Esther Martinez Voyles, David Torres, Janie Hickock, and Elizabeth Hix. He is preceded in death by his bride of 39 years Elisa Torres, his parents, sisters Maria Torres, Mary Torres, and Lupe Sandoval. Brothers Pedro Lugo, Elias Martinez, Helen Garcia, and John Torres.
