Martha Carter December 22, 1939 – August 04, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Martha Carter was born to Kali Moss in Montgomery, Alabama on December 22, 1939 and received her primary education in the Montgomery School System. While growing up in the South, Martha began her career of working as a Housekeeper and Nanny for wealthy families. Martha was baptized as a young girl in a river in Alabama and as she matured, she appreciated her relationship with Christ. In 1962, at the age of 23, Martha traveled north to The Big Apple, and settled in New York City. This is where she met the love of her life of 47 years, Levi. Through this union, their only child, Kellee was born. While in New York Martha continued to work as a Housekeeper and Nanny for wealthy families and her desire to instill greatness in Kellee was perfected. Martha was a staunch supporter of education and being well-groomed; two important life principles she learned working for those who appeared to have the best of both and she was unyielding that her family would have as well. Despite, not having achieved higher education, Martha always sought the best vision for her family. She encouraged Kellee to achieve beyond the basics and was filled with extreme grandmother pride when her grandson and the first person in her family to graduate from college, Timothy, graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas College. Mere words could never express how proud she was to witness this accomplishment. Ms. Carter as she was known to 115th and Manhattan Avenue, was the matriarch of the family and the main person who cared for her grandchildren, Timothy and Destini. She believed if she could raise and show love to the children of the families she worked for, who better to raise and love her own grandchildren than her. Due to Martha’s guidance, and love, her household avoided many unseen mistakes because she was intuitive and very protective of her family. Martha gave genuine advice to anyone who needed it. Martha and Levi lived in their same apartment since 1972 and she was known for keeping an immaculate home and being a gracious hostess. Her natural servant’s heart made a visit to her home a welcomed trip. Much like her home, Martha was very stylish in her appearance and always sharp! She kept a flawless manicure at all times… and those signature burgundy nails never had a chip! She was also regarded for her culinary skills especially collard greens, corn bread, potato salad, and chitterlings. When she was enjoying her favorite classical music, it was certain there was going to be some good ‘ol food coming out the kitchen. Martha was a compassionate person; when a family member or friend was sick or in need, she would clean their house, cook for them and grocery shop if necessary. Martha never allowed her kindness to be taken for granted – she would command respect and let you know not to disrespect her or her family. As time progressed and Martha’s health began to decline, she embraced her family closer and reaffirmed her love of Christ. Martha enjoyed when Kellee would recite the 23rd Psalm, that was her favorite scripture. On August 4, 2019, God dispatched His Angel with love to guide His beloved Martha to rest from her labor. For the Bible declares, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord… Martha touched many lives and has left memories that will last forever. She is survived by her daughter, Kellee; grandson, Timothy; granddaughter, Destini; cousin, David; niece, Della; and a host of family and friends. Martha was preceded in death in 2009 by her soulmate and only true love, Levi.
