Marcella Berniece Krueger was born on September 5, 1928 on the family farmstead west of Wessington Springs in Jerauld County to John and Martha (Fuerher) Krueger. She attended country school through the eighth grade. She then went to work doing housework and child care for neighboring families. Marcella worked at Aggie’s Café in Wessington Springs, where she met her future husband, Harold Hehn. On February 19, 1950, Marcella and Harold were united in marriage in Wessington Springs. They raised five children on the farm northeast of Wessington Springs. After the deaths of her parents in the mid 1950’s, Marcella welcomed her youngest sister, Jeanette, into their home, where she and Harold raised Jeanette through her teenage years. Marcella and Harold left the farm and moved to Huron in 1977. Harold passed away on December 11, 1990. After a long and courageous battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Marcella became a resident of SunQuest Healthcare Center in October 2010. Marcella worked in food service for many years at the school cafeteria in Wessington Springs. After moving to Huron, she continued her lifelong career in food service at Huron Regional Medical Center, where she was employed as a cook, baker, salad maker, as well as serving in the cafeteria. She took pride in a job well done, and her family was very proud of her dedication to her work, sharing in her happiness when she was honored as the June 2003 Exceptional Employee at HRMC. Marcella retired from HRMC in December 2006 after 29 years of service. Marcella was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Wessington Springs and was currently a member of First Baptist Church in Huron, where she served in the Ladies Aid until she became a resident at SunQuest Healthcare. Marcella enjoyed seeing many parts of the country on bus trips with her daughter Linda and others. A highlight of her travels was the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. Marcella loved roses and took pride in the beautiful rose bushes she grew in her yard. She always looked forward to spring so she could get out in her yard and plant and tend to her many beautiful flowers. Marcella always had a special place in her heart for cats and especially the companionship of her pet cat Buffy for many years. Marcella loved her family most of all, and looked forward to spending time with her children and grandchildren. Grateful for having shared Marcella’s life are her children, Vernon (Linda) Hehn of Sturgis, SD; Darold (Susan) Hehn of Rapid City, SD; Dennis Hehn of Brandon, SD; Linda Hehn of Huron, SD; and Cindy (Donald Lee Bird) Heppler of Canton, SD; four grandchildren, Jessica (Thaddeus) Jockisch of Summerset, SD; Joshua (Mary Jo) Hehn of Spearfish, SD; Casey (Steven) Tow of Yankton, SD; and Kyle Heppler of Minneapolis, MN; two great-grandchildren, Zoey Hehn of Spearfish, SD and Wyatt Tow of Yankton, SD; and one baby girl Hehn expected in October.
