Lois Jean Ryon Schmidt passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2019, at the age of 86. Lois was born in Evansville on July 4, 1933 to the late Marvin and Clementine Ryon. Lois lived her entire life in Evansville. She graduated from Bosse High School, Evansville College and obtained her Master’s degree in Education at IU. She attended Caze School during grades 1-8. She then came back to Caze School after college to teach the 2nd grade for 39 years. Lois has stayed active in her sorority Alpha Omicron Pi and cherished her friendships with her sorority sisters. She was active in many organizations during her lifetime. After her retirement from teaching she enjoyed playing golf, was a Red Cross volunteer, a Master Gardener and SW Indiana Master Naturalist. She was active with her retired teachers group from Caze School and the Evansville Audubon Society. She was a proud supporter of many charities that shared her interests in preserving nature for the future generations. She loved gardening and sitting with her husband, Jack, on their deck admiring their plant friendly yard, home to butterflies and birds. She was an avid fan of UE and other Indiana basketball teams. Lois is survived by her husband of 60 years, Jack Schmidt, her sisters, Dianne (Jim) Murray of St. Petersburg, Florida and Linda Scholl of Sebring, Florida, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will be missed by her family, her many friends and many of the students that she taught. Lois was loved and admired by many for her positive attitude and kindness to all she met. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, sister Marilyn Thorne and brother Jim Ryon. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at Ziemer Funeral Home North Chapel, 6300 North First Avenue, Evansville. Funeral services will be on Monday, August 12, at 10:00 am at the funeral home with Pastor Marla Weller officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, 2200 Mesker Park Drive, Evansville, 47720. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Evansville Audubon Society at Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, 551 North Boeke Rd., Evansville, IN 47711.
