Bluefield, VA- JoAnne Gillespie Atkins, 88, of Bluefield, VA, died Monday April 29, 2019 at her home. Born January 15, 1931 in Keystone, WV, she was the daughter of the late Joseph C. Gillespie and Ethel Pickett Gillespie. Mrs. Atkins was a resident of Bluefield since 1952, moving here from McDowell County. She was a homemaker and life-time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she was involved with the Women’s Circle. She loved her church and worked tirelessly to serve in any capacity that she was needed. She was also a member of the CEOS. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert A. Atkins. Survivors include her children, Karen A. Shott of Bluefield, VA, John C. Atkins and wife Kelly of Johnson City, TN, and Steven M. Atkins and wife Connie of Salem, VA; grandchildren, Andrew M. Shott and wife Tracey of Mooresville, NC, Jason C. Shott and wife Michelle of Mooresville, NC; Katherine G. Atkins of Salem, VA, and John A. Atkins of Salem; VA; five great-grandchildren; and special caretakers who provided her with wonderful care and became her friends, Kay Macomber, Martha Perdue, Barbara Atwell, and Jane Adams. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday May 1, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jonathan Rockness officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday at the church from 12:00 p.m. until the service hour. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens where family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
