Elizabeth Marie Barber March 27, 1959 – August 24, 2019 PLATTSBURGH — Elizabeth Marie Barber, 60, passed away Saturday Aug. 24, 2019 at UVHN-CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Plattsburgh on March 27, 1959 to George J. and Elizabeth (Mulligan) Barber. Marie earned a bachelor’s degree in Theatre from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1982. She worked in theaters, costume shops, tailors, and fabric stores in Maryland; Albany, and Plattsburgh. She returned to SUNY Plattsburgh in 1996 where she was the resident Costumer. She designed main stage productions as well as other theater productions and maintained an extensive collection of costumes used by the theater department as well as drama clubs in schools around the region. She taught countless students the arts of costume design, pattern-making and construction. She retired from SUNY Plattsburgh in January 2019. For many years she also worked at the North Country Food Co-op. For the past 35 years, Marie’s faith and devotion as a Jehovah’s Witness was a significant part of her life and gave her both strength and hope. Marie was creative virtually every waking hour: always sewing, crocheting, knitting, drawing, and any other craft she could explore. She played many musical instruments, was a fabulous cook, and an excellent story-teller. Marie is survived by her siblings: Eileen (Peter) Allen of Cumberland Head, Thomas of Plattsburgh, David (Ann) of Plattsburgh, and James (Carol) of Ballston Spa. She was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Helen. Although Marie did not have children of her own, she was the ‘adopted mom’ to many in the community. She was outgoing, compassionate, kind, witty, generous, and creative, and inspired these traits in all who met her. Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life at the Holiday Inn in Plattsburgh on September 7, 2019. The service will begin at 3:00 PM followed by a reception and light refreshments.
