Derwood “Pop” Penney was born February 13, 1941 in Corsicana, Texas to parents Curtis and Harmolena Penney. He went to be with the Lord August 10, 2019. Der married Wanda Fitch on June 2, 1962 and they were happily married for 57 years. He loved God, family and baseball. Der was a farm parts department manager for over 45 years with J.A. Penney Implement and Vitters Tractor. After retiring, he was a volunteer assistant coach for the Navarro College Baseball Team for 16 years; he loved every player as if they were his own. He taught them not only about baseball, but also about becoming young men. Der had a strong Christian faith and loved to share his faith with everyone. He is survived by his loving wife Wanda Penney; daughters Annette Hall and her husband David, Becky Villa and her husband Jose and Kristy Barfknecht; grandchildren Austin Hall and his wife Monica, Alan Vitters and his wife Kendle, Corbin Hall, Joey and Jacob Villa, Jaxson and Jared Barfknecht. Family will receive friends for at a visitation Tuesday, August 13, 2019 from 6-8:00 P.M. at Griffen-Roughton Funeral Home, Corsicana, Texas. A funeral to celebrate the life of Derwood “Pops” Penny will be held Wednesday, August 14, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at Northside Baptist Church, Corsicana, Texas; officiated by Pastor Rick Lamb. He will be laid to rest at Hamilton Beeman Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Skip Johnson, Matt Podjenski, Brett Doe, Kyle Freeman, Larry Meador, Greg Baumgartner, Roberto Gallegos, Brock Holt and Chris Davis. Honorary Pallbearers will be a lifelong friend Jimmy Dawson and all current and former Navarro Bulldog Baseball players.
