Anatol “Tony” Dowbnia December 11, 1933 – August 25, 2019 Share this obituary View/Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card| Memorial Donation Anatol “Tony” Dowbnia, loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and uncle, passed into the merciful arms of his Lord Jesus Christ on August 26, 2019. He was 87 years old and died peacefully at his home in Allentown, New Jersey, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Majorska, Ukraine, Anatol emigrated to the United States with his mother Helen, father Gregory, brother Stanley, and sister Valentina on January 20, 1949. Prior to coming to America, they spent four years (1945-1949) in West Germany living in a WWII refugee camp. For a time, Anatol and his mother worked as forced labor in a German aircraft factory. The family crossed the Atlantic on the American troop transport ship the SS Marine Marlin, finally arriving at Ellis Island. Anatol and his family came to the U.S. as “displaced persons”—refugees from the war. He loved and respected the United States and was thankful for the life America afforded him and his family, but he never forgot his native Ukraine. Starting their new life in Maryland, Anatol and family moved in 1950 to Trenton, New Jersey, where he worked for 26 years at the American Bridge Division of US Steel, and then 14 years at General Motors in Ewing, New Jersey. Anatol and his beloved Helen (Zinchenko) were married in May 1953 and faithfully attended St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yardville. Anatol was an avid sports fan. He especially enjoyed soccer, baseball, tennis and swimming. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed fishing, whether it was on a local lake or in the Gulf of Mexico. Fishing always brought a smile to his face, and never more so than when he was fishing with his children and grandchildren. His happiest moments were when he was surrounded by his family. Surviving Anatol are his wife of 66 years, Helen (Zinchenko); daughter, Victoria and husband, Jameson; daughter, Vera and husband, Scott; son, George and wife, Darien; son, Albert and wife, Karen; grandchildren, Alex, Adam, Kyle, Zachary and Emma, as well as Anatol’s sister, Valentina Dowbnia, brother-in-law, Anatol Zinchenko, many nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen; father Gregory; sister-in-law Louis Boychuk and her husband, John. The viewing will be held at 9am, Saturday, August 31, with Divine Liturgy immediately following at St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 839 Yardville-Allentown Road, Yardville, N.J.
