Thomas Melvin Williams, Jr., age 92 of Tazewell, VA died Sunday, June 9, 2019 at Dogwood Crossing Assisted Living Center in Tazewell, VA. He was born September 11, 1926 in Tazewell County, VA and was a son of the late Thomas Melvin Williams, Sr. and Helen Corell Williams. Mr. Williams was a 1944 Graduate of Tazewell High School and later in life earned an Associate’s Degree in the technical field of leather working and welding from Southwest Virginia Community College. Tom was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, having served in the Hawaiian and Marshall Islands as a Corporal T5 – 57/37 Gunner and was also a machinist. Tom was present for the testing of the Atomic Bomb. Upon returning from the war Tom worked as an Over the Road Driver for Frito-Lay / PepsiCo, retiring with over twenty-five years of service. He enjoyed quilting, sewing, cooking, working on machinery and farming in Adria. Tom was a jack of all trades and would try his hand at anything. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Sarah Jane Fox Williams, who raised him as her own; his first wife, Louella Pearl Wilson Williams; his second wife, Dora Irene Little Williams; one sister, Jane Louise Williams Farmer Presley; one half-sister, Ruth Williams Morrison; two half-brothers, Bill and Dave Williams. Those who survive to cherish his memory include his daughter, who was his pride and joy, Sarah Denise Williams of North Tazewell, VA; step-daughter, Chrissie Anderson Peters and husband, Russ of Bristol, TN; one half-brother, Larry Williams of Tazewell, VA; three nieces, Deborah Morrison Breedlove and husband, John and Jennifer Morrison Oakes and husband, Mike, both of Roanoke, VA and Terri Williams Stiltner and husband, Scott of Tazewell, VA. Funeral Services for Mr. Williams will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2019 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with the Rev. Conn Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by members of Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, VA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2019.
