Peggy J. (Shireman) Byerly, 82, of Corydon, passed away Monday, June 24, 2019, at her home near Corydon after a lengthy illness. Peggy was the daughter of farmers and always held them in high esteem. She served them well in her more than 36 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and cheerfully helped them navigate the labyrinth of government red tape. Her pleasing personality and radiant smile endeared her to all who knew her. She was a talented organist and a soprano and participated in a number of musical endeavors. Her administrative efficiency made her in demand with a number of organizations. She was the first secretary of the Old Capitol Saddle Club, a position she held for many years. She was also a former secretary for the Indiana Cutting Horse Association, the Tri-State Quarter Horse Association, and the Indiana Draft Horse Association. In her retirement years, she and a distant cousin spent a vast amount of time doing ancestral genealogy research with the resulting book containing more than 6,0000 names. She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Merrill and Freida (Love) Shireman of New Salisbury; her brother, Harold of Fort Myers, Florida; and her sister, Virginia Surdi of Indianapolis. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of more than 58 years, Carl E. Byerly of Corydon; her sister, Rosemary Geisy (Bob) of Charleston, South Carolina; her nephew, Chad Shireman (Jenny Lu) of Glasgow, Kentucky; her nieces, Rachel Chesser (Tim) of Charleston, South Carolina and Rhea Dexter (Brad) of Princeton, New Jersey; and friends and neighbors too numerous to mention. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2019, at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon. Rev. Steve McAfee will officiate. Judy Albin will be the organist. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Corydon. Visitation will be after 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to the Carl and Peggy Byerly 4-H/FFA Scholarship Fund administered by the Harrison County Community Foundation. Pallbearers will be Stanley Byerly, Jeff Byerly, Justin Byerly, Randy Flick, Joann Frederick, and Barbara Mardis.
