Norman Cannon June 22 2019

June 22 2019
Norman Dale Cannon, 84, died peacefully surrounded by his granddaughter and great grandchildren Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the home of his granddaughter in Grantsville, Utah followed by a ten-year decline in his health. He was cared for faithfully by his daughter. Norman was born in Butte, Montana and traveled all over the country for work and adventure. Always quiet and thoughtful, this brilliant man started his adventures when he earned the highest score on the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corp test giving him a full ride scholarship to the school of his choice, Harvard University, graduating in Applied Mathematics. During his schooling, he was in the Navy ROTC program and trained aboard the Battleship Wisconsin, and worked at the Harvard observatory analyzing data collected by the telescope there, which was his favorite job he ever had. During his 50-year computer programing career, he was contracted by the government to be on the team that wrote the first computerized defense system (SAGE) for our country. A true hippie of the 70’s, Norman owned a classic, orange VW van and was always happy to be headed out exploring the country. In his childhood years, Yellowstone National Park, was THE place to go and he talked about many road trips there throughout his life. Norman is survived by his daughter, Susan Cannon, granddaughter Hannah Mickelsen (Charles), and his great-grandchildren Matthew, Brooklyn, Kennedy, and Abigail Mickelsen, brother-in-law Wayne Hines, cousins Kevin Hines, and Mary Cannon, and many more loving cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Fayette A. Cannon, Sr., mother Ruth Christen Cannon, brothers Bruce, Robert, Fayette, Kenneth, and sister Cynthia Hines. A service will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah followed by his burial in Butte, Montana. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Norman Cannon please visit our Sympathy Store.
