Morris G. Baxter, 83, of Columbus, passed from this life at 11:42 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. Mr. Baxter was born July 9, 1935, in Bartholomew County, Indiana, the son of Fred and Sylvia Dowden Baxter. He married Edell J. Waltz; she preceded him in death December 23, 2010. Mr. Baxter was a United States Army Veteran. He retired from Cummins Engine Company after 30 years of service and for 27 years, he was a racehorse trainer. Mr. Baxter was a member of the American Legion Post 24 in Columbus, the Thoroughbred Racing Association and Columbus Moose Lodge No. 398. Mr. Baxter is survived by his children, Becky Clayburn of Columbus and Roy (Diane) Baxter of Winchester, Indiana; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley (Gordon) Davis of Columbus; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Baxter was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Sylvia Baxter; his wife, Edell; son, Wade M. Baxter; grandchildren, Lindsey Baxter and Travis Snyder; and sister, Phyllis Trisler. In keeping with Mr. Baxter’s wishes, cremation will take place. Private inurnment will be at Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery. Caring service is being provided by Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.
