Mrs. Schaefer was born in Muskegon, Michigan on September 6, 1917 to John Walter Geboo and Martha Marie (Schoessow) Geboo. Miriam had two older brothers, John and Walter Geboo. Miriam attended Michigan State University, receiving a BA in Mathematics and Statistics in 1939 and an MA in 1940. After graduation, Miriam worked as a statistician for The Michigan Conservation Department. For two years she served as President of the Michigan Baptist Youth. During World War II she worked as a statistician for the USAF Materiel Command at Wright Air Field in Dayton, Ohio. Miriam married Lawrence Edward Schaefer on March 15, 1944. Miriam continued to work for the Air Force while Lawrence served in the US Army in Europe. After Lawrence was released from the Army in 1946, the Schaefer’s moved to Flint, where Lawrence was a professor at General Motors Institute and Miriam taught at Flint Community College before having children. Later, Miriam taught mathematics in the Flint Community Schools at Emerson Junior High and Flint Northern High. She also served nine years as Mathematics Coordinator K-12 for the Flint schools and retired in 1981. Miriam transformed elementary mathematics instruction in the Flint schools from pen-and-pencil to computer-assisted instruction. Her pilot program was used in the Title One program in the Flint schools, and later around the United States. From 1946, Miriam and Lawrence and their children were members of Woodside Church (formerly First Baptist Church). Miriam taught Sunday School and served a term as Sunday School Superintendent; she served on the church board in numerous positions. She and her family sang in the church choirs. Miriam worked with the Flint Science Fair for many years and served as Director of the fair for two years. She volunteered with the Cub Scouts. She served as Executive Secretary for the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Before Miriam retired from that position, the Council created in her name a scholarship program for college students. Miriam was preceded in death by Lawrence in April of 2000. Surviving are four children, son, John and wife Beth of Virginia; daughter, Mary Downs of Pennsylvania; son, Mark of New York and son, Paul of Flint; three grandchildren, Karl Schaefer and wife Christine, Christopher Schaefer and wife Kate, and Sara Rosensteel and husband Jamie; six great grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild.
