Lula Hooker September 02, 1940 – June 08, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card With her family by her side, Lula Parrish Hooker, 78, was called home to our beloved Father on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. Lula was born September 2, 1940 in Chatham County to the late Sandy Parrish, Sr. and Mary Jane Alston and was raised by her oldest sibling Mamie Walker. One son, Gordon Lee Hooker, 10 sisters and 8 brothers preceded her in death. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Parrish Chapel Church where she served as Deaconness, President of Usher Board, Senior Choir member, Director of Kitchen Committee, Director of Parrish Chapel Summer Camp and Vacation Bible School Teacher. Lula attended Jordan Sellars High School. Later on she entered the work force as a Spinner at Dixie Yarns, Inc for 27 years. Following the closing of the textile mill she obtained her Associate of Arts in Early Childhood Education at Alamance Community College. Her passion for educating children was evident by her successful career as a lead 4 year old teacher at The Barringer Center, in Elon for 11 years where she was named Teacher of the Year in 1996. For those who knew her well, they knew she loved her family, friends and community. Lula was affectionately known to many as “Memaw”. She cherished worshipping in church, Sunday dinner with her loved ones and attending her children’s sporting events. She was known for her powerful testimonies as she endured 18 years of receiving dialysis treatments. She was often heard stating that she was in a win-win situation as referring to her time on earth with family or going home to be with the Lord. All of her testimonies ended with a declaration of “Shonuff”!
