Julia Dowd of Cornwall, New York, and formerly of the Woodlawn Section of the Bronx, passed away peacefully at Cortlandt Health Care on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the age of 90. Born to the late Roman and Anna Chodan, Julie was raised in New York City, the youngest of five children. She worked for many years in the billing departments at two high-end department stores in Manhattan. She met the love of her life, Herbert B. Dowd and they married on May 7, 1955. Herb and Julie lived on Heath Avenue in the Bronx from 1955 until they made the move to Woodlawn in 1979. Julie became a stay-at-home Mom to their two children, Michael and Susan. When Julie and Herb retired, they enjoyed traveling especially to Atlantic City and were very active with the Woodlawn Taxpayers Association (which Herb was a board member of). When Herb passed away in 2007, Julie filled his position for a short period of time. They were happily married for 52 years. In 2014, she made the move to Cornwall, to live with her son Michael and his family. While living in Cornwall, Julie became active with the Cornwall Senior Center and especially enjoyed her Chair Yoga, the daily lunch and coffee sessions.Julie is survived by her two children, Michael Dowd and his wife Eileen of Cornwall, NY and Susan Hansen and her husband Doug of Hopewell Junction, NY, as well as her grandchildren, Theresa and Timothy Dowd and her step-grandsons, William and Douglas Hansen.In addition, she is survived by her nephew, Bill Chodan and his wife Lorraine and their children of Hopewell Junction, and her very best dear friend of 65 years, Stella Panagakis, of Wayne, New Jersey. Julie is also survivied by many nieces, nephews and cousins in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.Reposing at Hawthorne Funeral Home on Thursday, June 27 from 4-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Holy Rosary Church, Hawthorne, NY on Friday, June 28 at 10 AM.
