Memorial service for Joe Edward Hovater, age 78, of Decatur, will be Saturday, June 29, 2019, 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Decatur. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to service at the church. Shelton Funeral Home is assisting the family. Mr. Hovater, who died Saturday, June 22, 2019, at his residence, was born October 19, 1940, in Flat Top, AL, to William Russell Hovater and Annie Margaret Massey Hovater. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, worked for the Decatur City School System at Julian Harris School for 10 years, and was a chemist with International Paper for 29 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Barbara Terry Hovater of Decatur; one son, Jonas Hovater of Decatur; two daughters, Barbi Archer (David) of Decatur, and Teri Wales (Ken) of Madison; one brother-in-law, Dwight Terry of Decatur; four grandchildren, Nicole and Kaitlin Archer of Decatur, and Ethan and Kyle Wales of Madison; and several cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of North Alabama, 2457 Mall Road, Florence, AL 35630, or First Baptist Church Building Fund, 123 Church Street, N.E., Decatur, AL 35601.
