Joan Katherine McWhorter, age 88, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019. Joan was born December 19, 1930 in Battle Creek, Michigan the daughter of Edward and Bessie (Eells) Yates. She was a 1949 graduate of Battle Creek Central and a 1952 graduate of the Mercy School of Nursing. She worked 31 years at Leila Hospital as a Registered Nurse, retiring in 1993. Following retirement from nursing she became a DOCENT at Binder Park Zoo and a volunteer at the Calhoun County Care Facility. On April 10, 1954 she married David Kensley McWhorter. Surviving are a son, David Edward McWhorter; a daughter Betsy Leatherman and son-in-law Ronald Dean Leatherman, and two granddaughters: Kelly (Robert) Einhardt and Emily (Joshua) McCann. Also surviving her are two special friends Onnie O’Omeara and Evelyn Kelso. The family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Monday, June 17, 2019 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. with the Rosary to be recited at 4:00 p.m. A Memorial service will follow at 5:00 p.m. with Rev. Rick Weesner of Garrison Hills Wesleyan Church officiating. A private interment will be held at Banfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Binder Park Zoo or St. Vincent DePaul Society of St. Philip Church.
