Joan Fowler Thomas went home to be with her Savior on February 18, 2019, at her home in Fort Myers, Florida. A native of New York, she was a daughter of Patricia Rapp and the late Frank Fowler and Ann Fowler. She was also preceded in death by her twin sister: Jackie Byers of Orlando, Florida. Joan attended high school in Florida and New College, receiving her Doctorate from the University of Florida. She spent most of her life as an attorney for the State of Florida, taking one case to the US Supreme Court in 1991, winning a major victory for the State of Florida. Joan loved spending time with her family and taking long walks on the beach. She was a resident of Yancey County from 2006 until 2014 when her health declined and she and Bill returned to Florida. In addition to her mother, left to cherish her memories are her husband of 13 years: Bill Thomas; son: Nicholas (Nick) Thomas; daughter: Alliana (Allie) Thomas; sister: Dian Fowler of Stuart, FL; brother: Frank Fowler, Jr.; and, many nieces, nephews and cousins. A Celebration of Life will be held at South Estatoe Baptist Church, of which she was a member, on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at 11AM. Burial will be in the church cemetery following the service. Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is assisting the Thomas family.
