Gloria Gardner – “Don’t Hate Me Because I Am Beautiful” Gloria was from the Parish of Manchester-Craighead-Carter District Jamaica West Indies. Her parents were Arthur and Esther Roye. Gloria was the 9th child of 14 children. 9 boys and 5 girls. Gloria was called “G”. Reason being, is because there was a dog in the neighborhood named Gloria. Gloria would not answer to “Gloria”. She cried so much, her entire family had to call her “G”. As children growing up, we had a wonderful life. Our parents were very well off, because of that we were looked upon very highly. “G” was the brightest of the 14 children. She started to read on her own at 3 years old. The first book she read was Psalm 23 “The lord is my shepherd’ in the Bible. G was the lawyer of the family. Anything you wanted to know, just as G. Our father whom we called “Dada”, wanted G to be a lawyer. Mama our mother said “Over my dead body. She’s going to be a teacher”. Dada passed away when G was 10 years old. Mama was in charge all by herself. G passed her 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year teachers exam by the age of 13. She never failed an exam. She attended Nico Teachers College at 17 years old. While in college, she was very outstanding and athletic. She won 1st place in the 400 yard relay, 100 yard run, and the long jump. G was also a very good dancer. She knew all the new moves. While in college, she won several prizes as the best female dancer. G graduated from college at 19 ? years old. She then started to teach in the public school system. G fell in love with Lascells Gardner; also a teacher. G got married and had a son, Levack Gardner. Her marriage did not last very long. She and her son migrated to Brooklyn, New York. Her son Levack was very bright and athletic also. He was very good at playing basketball. At age 14, he received an “MVP” Trophy. Levack attended Albany State University. He majored in Business Management and Business Administration. He was the Valedictorian for the 250 black students on graduation day. At present, Levack still has his first job as a Manager at Verizon Wireless in California. He’s still a genius at calculus. While teaching, G attended Brooklyn College in the evenings for 9 months where she received her Masters of Science in Education-Gives Birth to graduating at 19 1/2 years old which paid a better salary. As time goes by, G left the teaching and began working for (ACS) Administration for Children’s Services. G enjoyed this job much more than teaching in the schools. G is survived by her brilliant and wonderful son Levack, a dear and lovely daughter in law Rohonoda, a registered nurse, and two very beautiful granddaughters Carli and Aysha, brothers, and sisters and a host of nieces and nephews. G retired in the year 2002 and was still enjoying herself. In parting, Gs words were “So you are now, so once was I” “Prepare yourself and follow me”.
