Winter, 73, of Newberry, died peacefully Sunday evening June 16, 2019 at home surrounded by his loved ones. Born October 4, 1945 in Saginaw, son of the late Godfrey “Guff” and Elinor (Tessin) Winter, Gary’s early life was in Hemlock, most of his childhood in Davison and a 1963 graduate of Saginaw Arthur Hill High School. On January 12, 1966, Gary enlisted in the United States Army serving in Germany until his honorable discharge on December 19, 1968. After working in Alaska, Gary moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Gary was an excellent outdoorsman enjoying hunting, trapping and fishing. He was what is called a good man in the woods. Gary had a gift in residential/commercial construction creating small businesses and buildings from scratch. He was the builder and owner of Winter Haven Motel and owner/operator of Gary Winter Septic Services for many years until his retirement. A resident of Newberry for over 30 years, Gary was a member of the American Legion #74 and the F.O.E. #3701 both of Newberry. Gary will be sorely missed by Zona, his loving wife of 31 years, whom he married December 3, 1988. Also surviving are his son Gary Jr., step-daughter Mary Lou and step-son Mark; granddaughter Elinor Winter; sisters Ruth Winter and Jean Gerdes; many cousins, friends, nieces and nephews. Per his request, cremation services have been accorded with no public services scheduled. Rather than flowers and memorials, Gary’s wishes were that you give someone a hug in his memory.
