David Earnest Durst, 67, of Salisbury, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Select Specialty Hospital in Johnstown, PA, with his friend, Tina Harvey, and his brother, Donald, at his side. Born July 10, 1951, near Grantsville, MD, David was the son of the late Wilbert and Verta (Baker) Durst. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Durst. David worked in construction in Frostburg, MD, and York, PA, following his graduation from Northern Garrett High School in 1969. Later, he worked for 23 years at Yoder’s Meat-Packing Plant in Grantsville, where he became a manager, a position he maintained until the plant’s closing in 2005. At that time, he returned to construction, joining a Thomas & Thomas Construction crew until his retirement. Outdoors was Dave’s favorite place to be, camping, hunting, fishing, mowing, or just being. He liked traveling to national and state parks, music festivals, car shows, and auctions. Dave also enjoyed helping others – family, friend or stranger, and he spent many evenings and weekends lending his construction skills to building, cleaning, repairing, mowing, or painting projects for others. He loved talking to people, always finding a connection, and he was the best storyteller. Dave also loved animals, and for the past three years, his fiercely loyal and tiny dog, Birdie, was his constant companion; she often accompanied him in his truck as he ran his daily errands. David is survived by one daughter, Becky Thomas and her fiancé, Andy Fazenbaker, Grantsville; one brother, Donald (Norma) Durst of Grantsville; three sisters, Carolyn Horton of Bobtown, PA; Diana (Bob) Enlow of Avant, Oklahoma; and Vickie (Jim) Gossett of Brownsburg, Indiana; two grandsons, Tylor Thomas and Joshua Thomas, both of Grantsville, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dave will also be greatly missed by many in his neighborhood, especially those on the Grant/Mineral Street blocks in Salisbury. Their many acts of love and service over the past several months were greatly appreciated by Dave and by those who loved him.
