Charlotte Kay Baker, 80, of Bristol, VA passed away Thursday, June 6, 2019 at NHC Health Care after a brief illness. Kay was born in Esserville, VA on October 3, 1938, a daughter of the late Vollie and Wanda Sergent Bolling. Kay was the salutatorian of the class of 1956 at J.J. Kelly High School in Wise, VA. She graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1959 with a Bachelor’s Degree and earned a Master’s Degree from Virginia Tech in 1985. She primarily taught general business, typing and short hand. She worked at Caroline County High School, VA from 1971 to 1991. After retiring in 1991, she worked for Mary Washington University as the secretary for notable civil rights activist, James L. Farmer. She moved to Bristol in 1996 and was an active member of Midway Baptist Church. She served in her church as the pianist and church secretary. Kay is survived by her brother, Chad Bolling and wife Fay of Dryden, VA; nephew Brian Bolling and wife Rachel of Bristol, TN along with their two children Chase and Brianna. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Midway Baptist Church and Pastor Dexter Terry and Song Leader Marty Farmer. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2019 at Midway Baptist Church, 21318 Old Dominion Rd., Bristol, VA. The funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the church with Pastor Dexter Terry officiating. The committal service and interment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon, VA. Pallbearers will be family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Midway Baptist Church.
