Betty Lou (Hofer) Carlson December 13, 1930 – June 22, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Betty Lou (Hofer) Carlson, 88, Sioux Falls, SD formerly of Salem, SD passed into God’s loving arms on June 22, 2019 at Dougherty Hospice House surrounded by all 11 of her children. Funeral Services will be at 10:30am on Friday, June 28, 2019 at Sun Prairie Baptist Church in Salem, SD with lunch and fellowship following. Burial will be at Hutterthal Mennonite Cemetery, rural Freeman. Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Thursday, June 27, 2019 at Heritage Funeral Home, Sioux Falls with a prayer service at 7pm. Betty Lou was born December 13, 1930 near Viborg, SD to Louie and Alta Christopherson. She graduated in 1949 from Viborg High School. She was united in marriage on May 18, 1952 to Paul Hofer in rural Irene, SD. To this union, they were blessed with 11 children. They began their family in rural Bridgewater then moved southeast of Salem in 1959 where they farmed until Paul’s death on December 14, 1980. She married Bill Carlson on June 10, 1988. He preceded her in death on April 21, 1989. Betty Lou devoted her life to being a homemaker. Her children are extremely grateful for the sacrifices that she made to raise her large family. She raised her children in the Christian Faith. Sun Prairie Baptist Church was a very important part of her life. She often spoke about how much she missed their fellowship after moving to Sioux Falls. She loved reading, cooking, and baking. Her house was filled with plants as she had a talent for growing them. Grateful for sharing her life are her 11 children – Pauline (Roger) Larson, Tim (fiancé Amy Kuecker) Hofer, Mark (Karen) Hofer, Pam (Randy) Bartunek, Bryant (Tracy) Hofer, Estelle (Mike) Konechne, Myron Hofer, Marsha (Sam) Goehring, Cynthia (Dave) Tuschen, Brenda (Paulino) Paz, and Orin (Vickie) Hofer. Grandchildren (35) – Amy (Todd) Kanz; Lacey and Nicholas Hofer; Christopher, Archie, Paul, Erika and Maggie Hofer; Brad (Anne) Bartunek, Greg (Jamie) Bartunek and Angela (fiancé Christian Hendricks) Bartunek; Garrett DeVries, Jenny, Jilianne, Noelle and Natalee Hofer; James (Beth) Konechne, Wendy (Derek) Wollman, Melissa (Tim) Tschetter, Jeremiah, Emily, Jordan and Abagail Konechne; Adam, Joshua and Matthew Goehring and Heather (Tyler) Vermeer; Eric, Zachary, Elizabeth Tuschen and Stephanie (Ryan) Benson; Benjamin and Maxwell Hofer. Step grandchildren Rachel and Renae Carlson. Great Grandchildren (14) – Tyler and Justin Harrington; Leileah Hofer; Jaidan Goulet and June Hendricks; Mollie Konechne, Jaxen, Laila, Kensley, Breyden and Greysen Wollman; Maci Tschetter; and Isaac Vermeer. Step great granddaughter Arianna Kanz. Betty Lou was preceded in death by her husbands, Paul Hofer and Bill Carlson; her parents, Louie and Alta Christopherson; step granddaughter, Bridget Carlson; and her sister, Marlene Bartels. Memorials will be directed to Sun Prairie Baptist Church.
