Joseph Chast (22 June 1925 – 11 May 2019) Born in NYC, Joseph Chast lived in Coxsackie and Athens, NY for most of his 93 years. Joe worked at many jobs including switch tender on the RR, truck driver building electric lines, taxi driver, and automobile salesman. A graduate of the College of Life Underwriters, he sold life insurance for many years. He worked as a rural letter carrier in Athens and Scotia. On retirement he was flagman for contract utility work. Joe loved people and was always willing to help. He served as a volunteer fireman in West Athens Limestreet Fire Company for more than 50 years, during which time he had terms as treasurer, president and Fire Commissioner. He was building inspector in the Town of Athens for a few years. Joe served a term as PTA president at Coxsackie-Athens Central School, and as a school board member. As a member of the Coxsackie Rotary Club, he served as Student Exchange Chairman. After retirement he was often seen at gallery openings, and on his front porch chatting with the neighbors. Survived by his wife Dorothy Anna Berner Chast, his two sons and one daughter, four grandsons, two great granddaughters, two nephews, and their families. Services will be private with a public memorial and Celebration of Life at a later date.
