A Service for August “Oscar” Joseph Thiels will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 1, 2019, at St. Clair Baptist Church with Rev. Mel Estes and Rev. Randy Ellis officiating. A Catholic Graveside service will follow in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, Gardner with Rev. Daniel Hart officiating and under the direction of John Kramer & Son Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Thursday, January 31, 2019, at St. Clair Baptist Church and resume from 9:00 AM until the time of service on Friday, February 1, 2019, at the church. Oscar Thiels, 74, of Gardner Valentine Community, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2019, at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital. Oscar is preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Mary Vanlangendonck Thiels and one brother, John “Wimpy” Thiels. Oscar was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was born on Heyman Lane in Alexandria on June 25, 1945. He was the youngest of six children. Oscar attended St. Rita and Menard High School. Shortly after marrying the love of his life, Sandy Richey, Oscar served in the United States Navy. After being discharged, Oscar and Sandy moved to Gardner where he spent the rest of his life. Oscar had a great sense of humor and was a very generous man. He had a welcoming personality and a warm heart. Oscar loved his grandchildren deeply and enjoyed spending time together. He was an active hunter and fisherman and was known to share fascinating stories with his friends. Oscar will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 54 years, Sandy Richey Thiels of Gardner; daughter, Pam Thiels Belgard and husband, Brad, of Gardner; son, Michael Thiels of Gardner; five grandchildren, Joshua, Joseph, and Jacob Belgard, Lakin Thiels and Kyle Rodgers. He is also survived by one brother, Pat Thiels and wife, Aliska, of San Martian, CA; three sisters, Chinky Cook and husband, Billy Wayne, Jo Jo Lewis, and Julia Ann Sasser and husband, Darrell, all of Pirates Cove, Toledo Bend; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers honored to serve include Scootie Thiels, Cannon Sasser, Scotty Sasser, Mitchell Reavis, Denny Foster, and Lane Howe. Honorary pallbearers will be William Terrel, Jimmy Mathis, Reggie Ballard, Clifford Connella, Steve Cook, and John Howe.
