Helen Laura Bernhardt January 03, 1928 – January 22, 2019 Share this obituary View/Sign Guest Book Helen Laura Vanderlaan Bernhardt, 91, of Higganum, wife of the late Lawrence Bernhardt, passed away at her home on January 22, 2019. She was born January 3, 1928 in West Palm Beach, FL, daughter of the late Theodore and Helen (Blackburn) Vanderlaan. Helen moved to Higganum at 9 months old and attended Union School and Woodrow Wilson High School, class of 1946. She attended the inauguration of President Harry S. Truman in 1945 with her parents and brother William. Helen worked for a newspaper in Deep River, Motor Vehicle Department, and was a register of voters in Haddam for 12 years. Shew as a life member of the Eastern Star and Matron for 30 years. She was active in St. James Episcopal Church as youth group leader, teacher, and member for 80 years. Helen is survived by her daughter, Debra Dailey and her fiancé Scott Emanuele of Higganum, grandchildren, Shannon Santos and her husband Gilberto, Rosemarie Dailey, Jason Dailey and his fiancée Amanda Norman, Justin Dailey, and Casey Dailey, great-grandsons, Roberto, Jason and Christopher, nieces, Christine Labarba, Karen Vanderlaan, Linda Waagen, nephews, Theodore and Albert Vanderlaan. She also leaves best friends, Gloria Sikorski, Winnie Distefano and Yvonne Kobylenski. Helen was predeceased by her husband Lawrence, brother, William and niece, Theresa. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday (Feb. 17th) at 1 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 501 Killingworth Rd., Higganum. There are no calling hours.
