OBITUARY Yvonne G Twomey January 1, 1925 – September 9, 2018 Yvonne G. Twomey, 93, of 6 Jericho Road, Scituate, MA, passed peacefully on September 9th after a long period of declining health. She was born in Boston, the daughter of John Gagnon and Julia Murphy Gagnon. Most of her life was lived in Scituate, but also Fitchburg, MA, Craftsman Farms, NJ, and Kinnelon, NJ. Yvonne earned a bachelor’s degree from Paterson State College in NJ, followed later by two master’s degrees (Reading and Library Science). She taught in the Kinnelon and Scituate school systems. She established the Bates House scholarship for high school students and she was elected to the Scituate Library Board. Yvonne traveled near and far, on over 50 Elderhostels. A special place was Star Island at the Isles of Shoals. She was an avid golfer and devoted supporter of the Scituate Animal Shelter, taking in a number of dogs and cats, survived by her last cat Simba. She had a life-long commitment to Scituate history, working with Dave Ball and others. She transferred her family’s historic Bates House to the town of Scituate and put the last parcel of farm land of the Scituate Men of Kent into conservation. Yvonne was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, John Twomey. She is survived by: her nephew, Jim Cerny of New Castle, NH; nieces Julie Wiley of Napa, CA, Cathy Robb of Goffstown, NH, Julie Robb of Portsmouth, NH; and long-time friend Bill Wood of Dundalk, MD, plus many dear Scituate friends. Her wonderful caregivers included Debbie Barnes, Susan Happel, Ellen Herling, and Anna Todd. A celebration of life will be held October 27th, 11 a.m., at the First Parish Unitarian Church in Scituate. Her long-time friend and minister emeritus Rich Stower will conduct the service.
