Obituary for Virginia Cass Estes Virginia Cass Estes, 86, of Newnan, GA passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2018. She was born in Fannin, MS on January 5, 1932 to John Thomas and Bessie Pearl Cass, one of three children. In her early childhood, the family headed east to Georgia, settling in Columbus. She started school and excelled in academics and the years passed quickly. It was in 1949, when she met Clarence Estes at the Four Square Gospel Church and her life would be forever changed. After she graduated from Baker High School in 1950, the couple wed in August of that summer. Initially they made their home in Columbus, but a job opportunity relocated them to Newnan in 1951. In Newnan, the foundation was dug deep, and the walls made strong for the home they were to establish. In this decade, they would see the birth of their four children and the beginning of a legacy. Virginia was a homemaker in every sense of the word and never one to settle for mediocrity. Basically, she wanted to see things done right. She worked heartily in creating a home in which her family would flourish. She was an excellent cook, a skilled seamstress, an exacting bookkeeper, a tutor, a spiritual advisor, and a tidy housekeeper, just to name a few. Above all, she was a loving, supportive wife to Clarence and a nurturing mother to each of her children. A job relocation in 1972 took the family to Cartersville for a brief 18 months. At the first opportunity, they returned to Newnan, home again. Shortly after returning and with the kids more independent, she began working with Glover Insurance Agency as bookkeeper. It wasn’t long after their move when their foundation was shaken by the loss of their youngest child, Robin, to cancer. Outpouring of love and support from this community embraced Virginia and Clarence and helped to sustain them through this storm of life. Later that year they saw the birth of their first grandchild and this new life brought great joy. Even though she was now working, she had no problem making time for this new cherished role as grandma, or “Nannie” as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren and children alike. As the family expanded with new grandchildren and in-laws, Virginia decided to leave her bookkeeping job to dedicate more time to be with her family. She and Clarence relished their roles and gave selflessly in supporting the now growing family they started many years prior. After Clarence retired in 1990, they enjoyed travel and cruises together, but their favorite times were with their loved ones. They bought a home in the mountains where the family could gather and enjoy over the many seasons and holidays making memories that will never be forgotten. In 2015, the Estes moved to St. Simons Island, GA following a move by their daughter a few years earlier. Virginia’s gracious kindness won the hearts of those who served her in her years at Marshes Edge. She was their favorite. In addition to her family, Virginia was involved in her community. Over the years she volunteered for numerous civic and service organizations. As an active member of First Baptist Church for over 60 years, she also taught 3rd grade Sunday School class for 15 years. Her life was an example of a faith lived out. Her greatest love was found in her Lord Jesus and from His love, she served and showed kindness to all those around her. She will be greatly missed. She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Clarence L. Estes. She is survived by 3 children, Denny Estes (Johnsie)/Newnan, Cheryl Morgan (Steve)/Atlanta, and Melanie Hatcher (Ed)/St. Simons Island, 4 grandchildren, Nicole Anderson (Yates), Robin Blake (Dwight), Melissa Barry (Trey), and Emory Hatcher III and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her youngest son, Robin Estes.
