Obituary for Richard Bruce Allen Richard Allen was born on September 25th, 1952 at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, to parents John and Julia Allen. He was a devoted son, an excellent teacher, and extremely hard-working, constantly seeking to better himself in his field, and excelling at everything he put his mind to. Richard started working at Baptist hospital in 1972 as a wheelchair transporter. While working at Baptist, Richard obtained his associates degree from Miami-Dade Community college, his Bachelors in Physics from FIU, his pulmonary certification (which he passed with flying colors), and was promoted to assistant director of the Pulmonary lab. It was there that he met Debra and Travis. He went on to become director of the pulmonary lab at South Miami Hospital, while also working on his MBA HA at the University of Miami. On September 26th, 1987 he and Debra married, and on August 5th of the following year their daughter Jessica was born. About a year after Jessica’s birth, Richard became director of the neuroscience department at Miami Children’s Hospital, and ultimately went back to school to obtain his teaching certification. He accepted a full-time position at Palmetto High School, followed by South Miami High School, and finally at New World, teaching sciences, which was his passion. Richard went on to become a professor at Florida Atlantic University, teaching respiratory therapy. He was honored to spend 2 summers researching high-energy particle physics at the prestigious Fermi and Jefferson accelerator labs. Richard loved the ocean, boating and diving. He was also a wonderful teacher, and truly enjoyed his students. Richard was written up in the book “Outstanding Young Men of America”, and over the last 2 years he fulfilled one of his lifelong dreams by entering into a doctoral program. Richard is survived by his son Travis, Travis’s wife Kathleen and son Liam, his daughter Jessica, his sisters Valerie and Deborah, as well as his nieces and nephews Vanessa, Ryan, Christopher, Nicholas, Julia, and Hayley. A memorial service will be held at St. Matthews Episcopal church, Miami Florida on Tuesday Sept. 18th., 2018 from 6:30pm – 7:30pm.
