Obituary for Melvin Vance Melvin Monroe Vance, 80, of Salem, went over the bridge to his forever home, a bridge that he did not have to build, on Wednesday, September 12, 2018. Mr. Vance was born June 29, 1938, in Doran, Virginia a son of the late George Washington Vance and Nanny Myrtle Elswick Vance. He served his country in the U.S. Army and worked as a crane operator building bridges. He was a super, amazing human who was kind to everyone and loved his two girls most of all. In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by thirteen brothers and sisters. Surviving are his daughters, Mary “Edi” Gusler and husband, James, and Barbara “Bobbi” Neighbors and husband, Frankie; grandchildren, James Melvin Vance Gusler, Christian Gusler, Shannon and Casey, Amanda Gasper, and Logan Neighbors; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Opal Alley. The first memorial service will be conducted on Monday, September 17, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at Beacon Baptist Church with Pastor Don Woodard officiating. An additional memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at Emmaus Road Community Church with Pastor Barry Fitzgerald officiating.
