Marlen Richard Messer, 65, Bruceville, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2018 at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Marlen was born April 29, 1953, in Knox county, the son of Harvey “Ted” and Betty Lou (Schultz) Messer. He married Deborah Brown on June 17, 2006. He was a heavy equipment operator at Peabody Coal Company and Bear Run Coal Mine for over 40 years. Marlen was a member of the Bruceville Rod and Gun Club. He was also an avid car and gun enthusiast and loved playing poker. Marlen is survived by his wife, Deborah Messer of Bruceville; mother, Betty Lou Messer of Bruceville; children, Marlen Richard “J.R.” Messer and his husband, Michael Chou of Hilton Head, SC, Angela (Jeff) Meeks of Noblesville, Bobbi (Michael) Zehr of Fishers, IN and Jon (Breana) Brown of Brownsburg; ten grandchildren, Dustin Meeks, Adrienne Meeks, Audree Logan, Brody Logan, Gabe Zehr, Kirsten Zehr, Miah Zehr, Eli Zehr, Lainey Brown and Memphis Brown; one great-grandchild, Lorelai Meeks; sister, Barbara (Alden) Phillips of Bruceville; nephew, Adam (Lee Ann) Phillips; and great-niece, Ali Phillips. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at 5:00 PM at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home Bruceville Chapel. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3:00 PM until time of service also at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest at Bruceville Cemetery.
