Obituary for Lillian Phillips Lillian E. Phillips Born in Somerville, NJ, Lillian Elizabeth Phillips lived for many years in Middlebush, the heart of Franklin Township. Before retirement, she worked for the Franklin Township Board of Education. Previously, Mrs. Phillips was employed as Office Manager of the I.B.M. Corporation (Trenton Branch). In the secretarial field, she worked for the NJ Motor Vehicle Agency in Trenton; and for Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. During World War II, she was an Aircraft Spotter for the Army Air Forces Ground Observer Corps. The spotters were trained and considered a key part of the War effort. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the 77th Division of the Armed Forces in New York City. She was a member of the Avramenko School of Ukrainian Folk Ballet of New Jersey and the group performed on the stage many times. She was also a member of the Ukrainian National Association. Mrs. Phillips was active in the 4-H Club and received many awards. Because of 4-H, the local Club and the Wengryn Family participated in a radio program one Thanksgiving Day morning. The theme of the interview was “What Are You Thankful For on this Thanksgiving Day?” The program was heard over Station NBC, New York. Mrs. Phillips also served as a Cub Scout Leader in Middlebush. She was a former member of the Franklin Senior Citizens. Surviving are two sons, Richard of Middlebush, and Gregory and his wife, Cyril, and grand-daughter Madison of Middlebush. Also surviving are her two brothers, Daniel of Hillsborough and George of Ringoes, NJ and many wonderful nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Elias, and her brothers Michael, Myron, Steven, John, Peter, Walter and her sister, Mary Wengryn. She was also predeceased by her parents Eva and Peter Wengryn. Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Second Reformed Church in New Brunswick, NJ. Services will be at Gleason Funeral Home in Somerset, NJ. Friends and relatives may attend for the viewing on September 12, 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral services will be on September 13, 10am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the East Millstone Rescue Squad, Middlebush Volunteer Fire Department and Second Reformed Church of New Brunswick.
