Laurence R. Veator Jr., 85, of Gloucester, died at his home on September 20, 2018. Born in Gloucester in 1933, he was the son of Emily (Hastings) Veator and Laurence Russell (“Russ”) Veator. He graduated from Gloucester High School in 1951, where he was captain of the track team and played football for four years. He graduated from Dartmouth College, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1955, was a Lieutenant in the Army stationed in Munich until 1958 and graduated from Harvard Business School in 1960. Most importantly, he married Patricia Ann Reilly in 1961, with whom he enjoyed over 57 years of marriage. In his high school yearbook, Larry wrote that his goal was “to see the other side of the cut bridge.” At the time, the cut bridge was the only way in or out of Gloucester. Larry had a 28 year career as an executive with W.R. Grace during the course of which he lived in Cambridge, MA; Greenville, SC; Sydney, Australia; Adelaide, Australia; Mahwah, NJ; Lausanne, Switzerland and Tokyo, Japan. He retired in 1988 as the president of the Pacific Inter-American Division at Grace’s New York City headquarters. He returned to Gloucester and spent his retirement years with Patti, their life-long friends and the many new friends that they kept making. He was a season ticket holder of the Red Sox and an enthusiastic member of Bass Rocks Golf Club. He and Patti spent their winters in Pass-AGrille,Florida, to which they became very attached. Larry is survived by his loving wife, Patricia, his children David (Kate), Christopher (Anne), Laura (Ky) and John (Michelle). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Caitlin, Kyle, Sydney, Charlotte and Audrey. All of them will miss him terribly but are grateful for his presence in their lives. There will be a Memorial Mass for Larry in Sacred Heart Church, Manchester on Thursday, September 27,2018 at 11:00 a.m. Extended family and friends are cordially invited to attend.
