James Ray Marcus JR July 20 1923 June 3 2018

Obituary for James Ray Marcus JR James Ray Marcus Jr. of St. James, Missouri passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018 at the St. James Veterans Home surrounded by his family, at the age of 94. James was born in Fillmore, Missouri on July 20, 1923 to the late James Ray Sr. and Eva Earl (Hopkins) Marcus. James was drafted into the United States Army and served from January 1943 – November 1945. It was WWII, and James was sent to North Africa before heading into Italy where he went to Salervo, made invasion of Anzio, and went the full length of Italy to the Swiss border. James earned 4 Battle Stars, and 1 Invasion Arrow. James returned home and on November 15, 1947 he married the love of his life Miss Margaret Mackey, this union was blessed with three children. James went to work for a High Voltage Electric Highline Company he and Margaret , and the children traveled around and he worked building the highline; after the children got older and in school, Margaret decided that life on the road was not something that they needed to be doing anymore so they settled down in St. James. They bought a small farm and raised their family , and a few head of cattle. James went to work at the Missouri Veterans Home where he spent the next 30 years in the Maintenance Department, retiring as the Maintenance Supervisor. He loved to be outdoors, always planting beautiful flower gardens, and a very bountiful vegetable garden. James was a member of the St. James Church of Christ, an Honorary Lifetime member of the St. James Sports Club, Boy Scout Troop #95 supporter and always ready to lend a hand, and for several years the baseball coach for the American Legion Baseball. He loved sports and was the St. James Tigers #1 fan for every sport. James was a teacher of all things, he taught by example; he never let another man down, he fulfilled every obligation he ever undertook, his word was his bond and everyone knew it. He was a great man and will not only be missed by his family, but the entire St. James sporting community as well. As ironic as it sounds, about three years ago James returned to the Veterans Home, this time as a resident, he took great pride in being able to help the Maintenance Department if the needed to know where a line was when they had to dig one up, and also as “Resident Gardner” he just recently planted about 12 tomato plants outside to share with his fellow residents. James is survived by his children, J.R. Marcus and wife Barb, of St. James, MO, Terry Richardson and husband Jim, of Rolla, MO, and Tarita Todd and husband Phil, of Waynesville, MO; grandchildren, Michelle Losing, of St. James, MO, Amy Brewer and husband Bill, of Rolla, MO, Justin Richardson and wife Tammy, of Rolla, MO, Julie Parsons and husband Richard, of Edgar Springs, MO, Andrea Klump and husband Steve, of Kansas City, MO, and Wendy Hill and husband Scott, of Rogersville; 18 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson, a host extended family and friends.
